New documentary “Willie Nelson Presents: King of

New documentary “Willie Nelson Presents: King of the Roadies” spotlights the music industry’s first known roadie – Ben Dorcy, also known to his friends as “Lovey.”

The film, co-directed by Willie Nelson’s daughter Amy Lee Nelson, will have its world premiere on Sunday, April 27 at the Texas Theatre as a part of this year’s Dallas International Film Festival (@wearediffdallas).

KXT contributor Preston Jones spoke with Nelson about the importance of crew for musicians, the wonder of Dorcy’s life and what it means to premiere his story in the city of his birth. Read the interview at the link in our bio.

The North Texas music scene has been dealt a shatt

The North Texas music scene has been dealt a shattering, unimaginable blow.

On April 23, Chris Penn, co-founder of Good Records and long-time co-manager of Tripping Daisy and the Polyphonic Spree, died in Dallas as the result of a fall outside Good Records on March 17, which left him paralyzed and in intensive care over the ensuing six weeks.

Penn was 54. He is survived by his wife and partner of 21 years, Jennifer, and his three sons, Oliver, Archie and Grover.

2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the “Red Headed Stranger” from Willie Nelson. The city of Garland, where it all began, will note the occasion with two days of celebration, May 16 and 17, billed as “Songs and Stories: Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Willie Nelson’s Red Headed Stranger.”

The “Red Headed Stranger” 50th Anniversary Tribute Concert on Saturday, May 17 will feature performances from will feature performances from @joshuaraywalker, @raybensonaatw, @rhettmiller, @max_stalling & @heatherstalling and @johnpedigo.

Soul Coughing’s music nearly defies description. Not because it’s difficult or provocative, necessarily, but rather because it so skillfully fuses such disparate parts (jazz, hip-hop, free associative spoken word, pop, rock) that the resulting concoction is overwhelming in its originality.

The New York City group Soul Coughing will pass through Dallas with a show at the Longhorn Ballroom on April 18.
