The Fort Worth African American Roots Music Festiv

The Fort Worth African American Roots Music Festival is celebrating its 5th anniversary this year. The festival kicks off at 12 PM on Saturday, March 15 at Fort Worth’s @southsidepreservation, and will feature a broad spectrum of performances, lectures and events, including appearances from @domflemons, @kyshonamusic and @rissipalmermusic.

KXT writer Preston Jones spoke with event founder and organizer Brandi Waller-Pace about balancing the academic and artistic, what has surprised them and the importance of community.

More than two dozen artists, from across Dallas, Fort Worth and Denton, are headed to Austin for official showcases (with plenty more scattered across unofficial day parties or other SXSW-adjacent events), bringing with them a full range of musical expression — everything from hip-hop to cumbia to punk.

Denton’s live music scene lost a legendary music venue in Andy’s Bar, a staple of the community for 30 years, which hosted its last show on Friday, February 28. But the music stops for nobody, and there are still plenty of venues to check out, including @danssilverleaf, Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studio (@rgrsdentontx), @harvesthousedenton, where you can hear local and touring artists play and maybe find a new favorite.

From Texas to Norway 🎶 Oslo-based band @theyoungmothersofficial enlisted Texas artists for its first album in six years.

The group’s genre-defying latest album, “Better If You Let It,” features performances from percussionist/vibraphonist @stefinebunzalez, as well as fellow Texans Jawwaad Taylor and Jonathan F. Horne.

Singer-songwriter Esteban Flores — better known

Singer-songwriter Esteban Flores — better known as Slow Joy (@slowjoyslowjoy) — is ready to pull the wraps off his full-length debut album.

“A Joy So Slow At Times I Don’t Think It’s Coming” will arrive on May 16 via the indie label Mick Music. The Dallas-based and New Mexico-born Flores recorded the album with producer Mike Sapone in Springfield, Mass. and El Paso.

Alongside the announcement of the LP’s impending release, Flores dropped the lead single, “Gruesome,” which soars on a sparkling guitar figure, double-tracked vocals and its rabbit-punch drums.
