New Music Monday Picks For April 18

Today’s New Music Monday selections include a Lubbock-born rocker, a Melbourne duo and a Dallas pop star in the making:

We haven’t been this bedazzled with the allure of disco strings since Soul II Soul’s “Back To Life.” Dallas’ very own David Karsten Daniels has received past praise from the New York Times, Pitchfork and NPR, who called his 2010 release I Mean To Live Here Still one of the “5 best genre-defying albums” of that year. His May 20 release Kaleidoscope features collaborations with Lex Land from NBC’s The Voice, Dallas rapper –topic, and this 3-minute and 22-second piece of awesomeness called “Reaching,” a song featuring his fellow songwriter and collaborator Chris Walker:

Margaret Glaspy is the singer and guitarist single-handedly responsible for another one of our most recent song crushes – the fabulously crunchy and catchy-as-all-get-out number called “You And I.” It’s got teeth, swagger, and a touch of T. Rex. She was just in town to play Club Dada, and was kind enough to team up with our On The Road crew for a video shoot. Our fingers are crossed for her mighty North Texas return once her debut Emotions And Math comes out this summer.

What’s not to love about an artist who names both his guitar and his latest single after his beloved grandmother? The Lubbock-born, Brooklyn-based Kevin Morby conjures up hints of the Pixies and the Jesus & Mary Chain with “Dorothy,” the new single from Singing Saw, which landed Friday, and which he’ll be supporting with a summer tour. Club Dada in Dallas is where you can see him work his magic on June 28.

This folk-pop duo from Melbourne has us convinced that there’s definitely something in the water in the Land Down Under. You’d be hard pressed to find a more addictive, happy groove than Oh Pep!’s “Doctor Doctor,” the lead single from their debut album, Stadium Cake. The album arrives June 24, and while there are no North Texas stops on their upcoming summer tour, a music lover can dream, right?

Keeping your ears happy –

XOXO
