Today’s New Music Monday picks have everything you need in the way of twang, protest songs and the new Warpaint:
September 23 not only marks the birthdays of The Boss and John Coltrane, it’s also the release date for Heads Up, Warpaint’s much-anticipated follow-up for their 2014 self-titled release. Rejuvenated by a two-year break in which the L.A. quartet’s members spent working on various solo projects, they reunited in the studio to start work on their third album, and the first single released into the wild, “New Song,” definitely shows off their pop-tastic side. Warpaint will be touring in support of Heads Up through the end of the year, and their itinerary includes a November 18 stop at Trees in Dallas.
The newest track from Father John Misty has actually been lurking around on his SoundCloud page for a while, but as any dedicated fan of Josh Tillman knows, he’s always good for a surprise and a chuckle or two. “Real Love Baby” was recorded while he was working with Mark Ronson and Lady Gaga on some tracks for her forthcoming album. While the song’s not slated to appear on FJM’s 2017 album currently in the works, it’s just Josh’s way of saying thank you to his devotees.

DBT co-founder and “Surrender Under Protest” writer Mike Cooley unapologetically invites you to get out of your comfort zone with his look at the bygone symbols of a tumultuous, divisive era in American history in “Surrender Under Protest,” a hook-driven, sucker-punch of a track from their September 30 release, American Band.
Nothing like a cover of a beloved Muddy Waters classic to get you right with Monday, especially when the lingering effects of the weekend won’t seem to subside. The Devil Makes Three hails from Santa Cruz and their cover of “Champagne And Reefer” is destined for repeat plays. Their new full-length Redemption & Ruin arrives later in the fall, and features cameos from the likes of Emmylou Harris and Duane Eddy. You can also catch them at The Granada on January 12.
