New Music Monday Picks For May 16

Your New Music Monday picks for May 16 feature a Drake cover, Madchester icons and garage-soul out of Shreveport…

In the three short years since their inception, Shreveport’s Seratones have been racking up the accolades and praise for their eastbound and get down ‘n’ dirty aesthetic, and the powerhouse vocals of frontwoman A.J. Haynes. Haynes may be a schoolteacher by day, but she and her three bandmates have what it takes to school you on sludgy hooks and a swagger that’ll reel you right in. If you’re a fan of The Bellrays and/or Alabama Shakes, “Don’t Need it” from The Seratones will be a welcome addition to your mix.

Fans of the seminal Madchester outfit the Stone Roses have been divided on this one, but the numbers don’t lie. Deezer streams for the foursome’s catalog shot up 500 percent once “All For One” — their first one in over 20 years — went live last week. Rumor has it that their third album will be arriving at some point this summer, and along with it four nights at Etihad Stadium in their hometown. Be on the lookout for dates in New York, Dublin and Japan.

Holly Miranda’s 2015 smash “All I Want Is To Be Your Girl” was on the receiving end for some major love here on the KXT airwaves last year – and just when you were wondering when the follow-up to that 2015 self-titled release would be landing, along comes Party Trick. This six-song collection offers up covers like no other, with the Detroit native reworking favorites from the likes of Morphine, Bon Iver, Alphaville, Sparklehorse and the late Lhasa De Sela. But it’s this cover of Drake’s “Hold On We’re Going Home” that has us in love with her all over again.

This newly-signed Austin duo The Wind + The Wave got their start opening for for their fellow hometown songwriter Bob Schneider, and have continued their winning streak with some heavy-duty TV placements in Grey’s Anatomy, where their covers of Snow Patrol’s “Chasing Cars” and the Beatles’ “She’s Leaving Home” caused Shazam to blow up. Meanwhile, the follow-up to their 2014 debut From The Wreckage is in the works, and lead single “The Grand Canyon” is an anthem to resilience, the beauty of our human connections and not taking those for granted.

XOXO
