Your post-Super Bowl New Music Monday picks include folksy jams, Polly Jean and honest-to-goodness Gulf Coast Soul.
2016 is shaping up to be the year The Suffers steal your heart and blow your ever-lovin’ mind. The last time they made the trip up I-45 to play the Smoke BBQ & Music Festival, it was apparent that the revelers didn’t know what hit ‘em, but the band could’ve played all night and the crowd would’ve been perfectly content with that. This 10-piece Houston outfit led by frontwoman Kam Franklin is a force of nature, so when you see them on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah tomorrow night and when their debut full-length arrives on Friday, prepare to be wowed.
Multi-instrumentalist and indie fave Andrew Bird’s mighty return is slated for April 1st with the release of Are You Serious. Be on the lookout for cameos from Fiona Apple and Blake Mills, and a super-spiffy deluxe edition of the album that’ll include an exclusive 10” of Are We Not Burning? The Devolution Of Capsized, and a 64-page full-color booklet featuring illustrations of the album’s tracks from the conceptual artist John Baldessari.
There’s never enough PJ Harvey to go around, so when everyone’s favorite 50-Ft. Queenie announced the April 15 arrival of The Hope Six Demolition Project, there was much rejoicing throughout the universe. Inspired by her travels to Kosovo, Afghanistan and Washington D.C., this long-awaited follow-up to 2011’s Let England Shake marks another chapter in Polly Jean’s long and storied career.
Happy listening!
