Siouxsie and the Banshees didn’t quite fit into any preconceived genre when they formed in 1976. Their first show at an English punk festival consisted of a 20-minute improvisation based on The Lord’s Prayer. The band would ultimately be instrumental in the creation of gothic rock, however, alongside other bands like The Cure and Joy Division. Inspired by Siouxsie’s anger over racist acts at a Chinese restaurant in London, Hong Kong Garden rocketed the band into the mainstream when the song was released as its debut single in 1978.
