Babatunmida (or, simply, Baba) Kuboye’s wish for Babatunmida (or, simply, Baba) Kuboye’s wish for anyone hearing his buoyant, vibrant, joyful music is a simple one.

“Feeling happier, feeling lighter, feeling the good energy to spread good vibes to others,” said the Nigeria-born, Dallas-based Afrobeat singer-songwriter during a recent conversation. “I think good vibes make the world go around. Everybody always, usually, has some type of challenge or frustration — things going on in their world. Music helps to navigate that. My music is always uplifting.”

@babakuboye, whose parents, Fran and Tunde, are renowned Afrojazz musicians and co-founders of the landmark Jazz 38 club in Lagos, and whose grand-uncle, Fela Kuti, is perhaps the world’s most widely recognized Afrobeat artist, is forging his own path, through his solo career as well as the founding of Down 4 Whateva Entertainment, the first minority-owned, independent Afrobeat label in the United States.

KXT contributor Preston Jones spoke with the Grammy-nominated artist about how he arrived in Dallas, the goals for his record label and the difference between responsibility and purpose.

Wu-Tang Clan is calling it a career. For what’s Wu-Tang Clan is calling it a career.

For what’s being billed as “The Final Chamber,” all eight surviving members of the deeply influential East Coast rap group — RZA, GZA, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Method Man, Inspectah Deck, U-God and Masta Killa — alongside Cappadonna and Young Dirty Bastard, who is performing in the place of his father, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, who passed away two decades ago, are touring one last time.

The tour stops June 13 at Fort Worth’s Dickies Arena, one of three Texas dates on the tour, which is scheduled to wrap up July 18 in Philadelphia. Run the Jewels serves as the opening act.

When he was first asked to participate, Jacob Metc When he was first asked to participate, Jacob Metcalf (@mynamesjacobi) wasn’t sure what to make of @pegasuscontemporaryballet’s multi-disciplinary performance series "Synergy."

“It seemed so out of left field for me, and I didn’t know what to think of it,” the Dallas-based singer-songwriter said during a recent conversation. “My first thought was, well, I have to at least see what’s up with this … I found it very intimidating at the beginning. We’re talking about the equivalent of an orchestra when you’re talking about a ballet troupe."

“These are the masters of their craft. In some ways, I wondered how could a stammering folk musician fit with a highly disciplined troupe of dancers?”

That sense of intimidation gave way to inspiration, as Metcalf — renowned for his finely filigreed folk music, exemplified by works like his 2022 LP Monitors — paired with Filipino-American choreographer Norbert De La Cruz III as part of the triptych of works premiering during this year’s edition of Synergy, which kicks off Friday, June 13 at Moody Performance Hall.

The North Texas creative community came together S The North Texas creative community came together Sunday to help keep beloved music & art hub @the_cicada_ftw alive. Spurred by a recent 25% rent hike, rising operating costs, and a slow, steady decline in foot traffic, the Near Southside collective space and music venue hosted a benefit event called Save The Cicada.

The benefit was the bar’s “busiest day on record by far,” Cicada co-owner Tyler Stevens said. The place was buzzing from open to close. Patrons sprawled inside and out on the grounds, there to support the award-winning “Best Place To Hear Live Music,” in Fort Worth.

Dallas DJs are teaming up with coffee shops like @ Dallas DJs are teaming up with coffee shops like @tradesdeli and @waywardcoffeeco to reshape nightlife with daytime dance parties and casual club vibes.

DJs Rami Ackerman and Stephen Carmona have teamed up with Wayward Coffee Co. to throw a monthly event called Labor of Love. The event starts after store hours at 8 p.m. A DJ board is set up a few feet behind the coffee bar, giving just enough room for a dance floor under a disco ball. Attendees can sip on wine, beer or juices served from the same counter people buy their espressos and matcha from while socializing in a more relaxing environment than a crowded bar.

And it all wraps up by midnight.
