Locals Chris Holt, Eric Neal, Tom Bridwell, and Steven Luthye have played in so many different bands over the years, that it is hard to keep track for biography purposes. The Slack, which finds them mining rock history to create their own “collection of melody and noise”, might be the best band yet for each of the four. Their new record The Deep End released January 19th to critical acclaim from Quick and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, and the single “Indier Than Thou” has been spinning regularly on KXT 91.7.

The Wood Brothers features siblings Chris Wood (a founding member of Medeski, Martin, and Wood) and his brother Oliver. Their stripped-down string band sound has produced three records. The first, Ways Not To Lose, was produced by John Medeski. They are touring in support of their most recent release, Up Above Your Head.

Dallas-based singer/songwriter Vanessa Peters has found much international acclaim as her local appeal builds. Touring Europe on the strength of her most recent record Sweetheart, Keep Your Chin Up, her jangly, country-tinged version of folk rock found favor with listeners across the pond, and is gaining steam here in the states as well.

Austin-based singer/songwriter Amy Cook stopped by the studio to play a few songs from her upcoming record Let the Light In, which was produced by Alejandro Escovedo and features guest appearances from Patty Griffin and Ben Kweller. Since migrating east from Los Angeles’ Hotel Cafe scene, Cook has received critical acclaim for her 2007 release The Sky Observer’s Guide. She blends folk, pop, Americana, and rock and roll to accompany her moving lyrics.

Local instrumental rockers Shibboleth stopped by the KXT studios on Friday, January 8th, to show off their unique style with afternoon host Joe Kozera. With a sound that recalls retro spaghetti westerns, as well as Duane Eddy and Herb Alpert, Shibboleth have forged a sound that is all their own, showcased on their latest record Experiment in Error.

Singer/songwriter Max Stalling joined Gini Mascorro in studio on Friday, December 18 during the Texas Mix. Originally from Carrizo Springs, Texas, Max Stalling received a food science degree from Texas A&M before venturing into music. On his latest release, Topaz City, Stalling brings together a show that blends an old-style country sensibility of danceable ballads with slightly edgy elements to provide a unique, distinctly Texan sound.

Former Slobberbone frontman Brent Best joins afternoon host Joe Kozera on Thursday, December 17th. Slobberbone, who broke up in 2005, was probably best known for their landmark 2000 album Everything You Thought Was Right Was Wrong Today. Shortly after breaking that band up, Best formed the Drams, who released their debut record Jubilee Dive in 2006 on New West Records.

Fort Worth native Maren Morris has been making music for 4 years already — almost a quarter of her life. The 19-year-old singer/songwriter just released her second record All That It Takes, which has garnered comparisons to Emmylou Harris and Bonnie Raitt. Maren also attended the first ever Grammy Camp, presented by the Recording Academy, as the only Texas artist invited among 43 students from across the nation. She joined Morning Show host Gini Mascorro on Thurdsay, December 17, for a live performance.

Local rockers Fate Lions stopped by the KXT studio for a live performance on Wednesday, December 16th 2009. Though they produce a throwback sound akin to ’80s pop icons like R.E.M. and Elvis Costello, Fate Lions push the genre forward on their debut record Good Enough For You. This band, which the Fort Worth Weekly calls “the real deal”, seems poised for success far beyond the DFW/Denton area.

Folk legend John Gorka stops by the KXT studios for a live performance with afternoon host Joe Kozera. Gorka, who was dubbed the “the preeminent male singer/songwriter of the new folk movement” of the late eighties by Rolling Stone, released his critically acclaimed debut I Know in 1987, and has followed it up with a string of well-received records on the Windham Hill label. Now on Red House records, Gorka recently released his 11th record, So Dark You Can See.
