Salim Nourallah is a North Texas music scene fixture. After gaining initial acclaim with the Denton-based Nourallah Brothers (with his brother Faris), he released several solo albums, most notably Beautiful Noise and his most recent, Constellation. Having also established himself as an in-demand producer (Old 97’s, Buttercup) and bassist (Rhett Miller), he joins Joe Kozera on the KXT Afternoon Show to play a few songs of his own.

Former Austinite Carrie Rodriguez’s career hit a big break when Chip Taylor, who wrote “Wild Thing” and “Angel of the Morning”, discovered her singing at the SXSW Conference in 2001. After releasing several albums with him, she put out her first solo record, Seven Angels on a Bicycle in 2006, followed by She Ain’t Me in 2008. Her new record, Love and Circumstance, releases in April.

Dallas singer-songwriter Iris Leu has quietly risen to be one of the most promising artists in the North Texas area. Her initial run of her debut EP, Permanent Transient, sold out after an extensive national tour. Hushaboo, which appeared in February 2009, showed the growth of her piano-based folk-pop sound.

Dawes sprung from the ashes of the band Simon Dawes, as lead singer and guitarist Taylor Goldsmith steered his new group into more country-rock territory, emulating the Laurel Canyon sound of the early 1970’s. Their debut release North Hills, prompted Rolling Stone to call them “the most promising purveyors of new-school country folk.” They bring their throwback sound to the KXT Afternoon Show with Joe Kozera before their show at the Cavern that evening.

Port O’Brien’s indie folk-rock sound solidified when founding duo Cambria Goodwin and Van Pierszalowski added a rhythm section, giving their music a sonic lift that has propelled them to critical acclaim. Tours with Bright Eyes, Nada Surf, and Modest Mouse brought them to new audiences, while their latest release Threadbare has gained the band an even larger fanbase. They join afternoon host Joe Kozera for a live performance before their show at the House of Blues.

Laura Veirs’ latest single, “July Flame”, from the album of the same name, has been in heavy rotation at KXT since we received it. Veirs’ songwriting, paired with boyfriend Tucker Martine’s production, creates an ethereal mood, with lyrics informed by her years of experience and travel. She gained a horde of new fans with her last release, Saltbreakers and stands to add even more new fans with this exceptional new record.

Mixing funk, reggae, and tribal sounds to form his own hybrid, Daniel KatsüK recently scored one of Fort Worth Weekly’s top 10 songs of the decade with “Evergreen”, from his 2008 release Out In the Wind. He brings his native-influenced sound to the KXT studio for a Wednesday morning performance with Gini Mascorro.

Dallas pop duo Smile Smile’s music comes from the wreckage of a relationship — one involving both members of the band. Ryan Hamilton and Jencey Hirunrusme were together when they made their first record, Blue Roses, but split before their upcoming release Truth On Tape. It’s hard to say that the broken relationship has had anything but a positive effect on the music, as their sunny songs hide the dark territory underneath.

Dallas-based Dove Hunter built quite a large buzz in the local and regional music community for two years before releasing their debut, The Southern Unknown. Norwegian singer-songwriter Sondre Lerche has worn many masks in his relatively short musical career, from the pop leanings of his debut Faces Down, to the Sinatra-esque stylings of the Duper Sessions, to the raw, punkish Phantom Punch. Fort Worth native Collin Herring visits the KXT studios during the Texas Mix to talk to Gini Mascorro and play some songs from his new record Ocho. His previous record, Past Life Crashing, showed his willingness to experiment with the alt-country genre, and he pushes that forward with this new disc. Collin plays at Billy Bob’s in Fort Worth that evening, and at the Green Elephant in Dallas on February 12th.

San Francisco-based multi-instrumentalist Mark Growden stops by the KXT studios to visit with Gini Mascorro about his first release in eight years, the upcoming Saint Judas. Growden, accomplished on the accordian, banjo, and saxophone, has carved a niche in the Americana scene with his harrowing songs. Listen to hear Mark’s intense live performance, where he becomes the only KXT artist to successfully play the handlebars.
