Nathaniel Rateliff, “When You’re Here”

When you listen to Nathaniel Rateliff’s latest LP, In Memory of Loss, you hear years of struggle combined with achingly honest lyrics that mix with the sound of traditional country and folk. While his wistful vocals envelop the listener completely, Rateliff has said the album was written to woo a woman. A woman, he says, he ultimately married. Currently on tour, Rateliff stopped by the KXT studio to play a few songs during the KXT Afternoon Show with Joe Kozera.

Delta Spirit, “Bushwick Blues”

San Diego band Delta Spirit formed in 2005 and released their debut EP, I Think I’ve Found It, in 2006. The band decided to self-produce and record their debut full-length album, Ode to Sunshine, in a a cabin in the San Diego mountains. Their second album, History From Below, was released June 2010. The band stopped by the studio Thursday, July 15, to play a few songs during the KXT Afternoon Show with Joe Kozera.

Cadillac Sky

Cadillac Sky, a critically acclaimed bluegrass band out of Nashville, created a hybrid of bluegrass, rock and blues with producer Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys on their third album Letters in the Deep. The music video for “Hangman,” a track off that album, was shot at Tent City, Nashville’s largest homeless community, just weeks before flooding devastated much of the city. Originally formed in Texas, the band stopped by the KXT studio to play a few songs during the KXT Afternoon show with Joe Kozera.

The Naptime Shake

If the list of acts that each member of The Naptime Shake comes from doesn’t sell you on the band, their music will. With a sound rich in rootsy, country tunes, the band counts Wilco, Bobby Bare Jr. and Will Oldham as influences and each member hails from acts as diverse as The Boom Boom Box, The Death Ray Davies, Pleasant Grove and Doug Burr. The band stopped by the KXT studio to play a few songs off their debut album, Blood and Panic, during the KXT Afternoon Show with Joe Kozera.

Black Tie Dynasty

Fort Worth-based Black Tie Dynasty formed in 2004, releasing their first full-length record Movements on Idol Records in 2006. The song “Tender” achieved top-10 success on the Billboard Charts, and they gained a larger audience touring with Spoon and Guided By Voices. Down Like Anyone, their follow up record, was released in 2008, before they disbanded in 2009.

Athlete

British indie-rock band, Athlete, released their fifth album, Black Swan, in 2009. The band’s sweeping, echoing guitar rhythms matched with haunting synth creates a sound that is best represented by their 2006 Ivor Novella Award winning song, “Wires” from the band’s 2005 album, Tourist. The indie-rock quartet has been friends since the age of 14. They joined KXT Afternoon Host, Joe Kozera, in studio for a few songs.

Cowboy Junkies

Since the sibling group formed in 1985, Canada’s Cowboy Junkies have been known for their alternative country sound. Their latest album, Renmin Park, released in May of this year and is the first part of four releases, collectively known as: The Nomad Series. The album has already been mentioned on Best Of 2010 critic lists and has been predicted by to make Cowboy Junkies fans out of each listener. Cowboy Junkies joined KXT Afternoon Show host Joe Kozera Thursday, June 17, to play a few songs.

Lou Barlow

Dinosaur Jr.’s Lou Barlow has been credited with being a major pioneer of the lo-fi rock movement in the late ’80s and early ’90s. Since Dinosaur Jr., Barlow has been involved with Sebadoh and Folk Implosion, and released his first solo album, Emoh, in 2005. Barlow’s second album, Goodnight Unknown, was released in 2009 and remains true to his lo-fi, folk-rock roots. Barlow joined KXT Afternoon Show host Joe Kozera on Tuesday, June 15, to play a few songs.
